Escape to the Lake

On a quiet end of a remote cul-de-sac in the Old Wildlife Club on Lake James, lies a timber frame home that will see much life. Kayla and Steve's retreat will be host to many family members and friends in their ‘cabin’. That’s what they named it because they’ve created a casual somewhat rustic atmosphere on the inside.
When you approach the house down the long curved driveway, you will first notice how the home blends into its setting in the middle of the woods. Additionally, the use of earth toned stains on the western red cedar siding, trim, and shingles helps it blend. The faux stone is a combination of several styles and colors chosen the Kayla to blend perfection with the house colors. And the stone anchors the house visually to the gently sloping lot.
As you enter the home through the inviting arched timber framed front porch, you are greeted by a massive custom made wooden front door. The 4’ wide by 8’ door sets the tone for the retreat. The large open living area allows family and guests to cook, eat and hang out together. Just beyond the great room is a long and large screened in porch to enjoy views of the lake through the trees.
To accommodate the large family, the main floor contains two suites - the master and in-law suite. These are purposefully located on the quite end of the house, away from the lake activity, for relaxation and peace. Upstairs there are three large bedrooms and a game room to house the many kids and friends. Kayla and Steve regularly expect at least 14 people retreating to the cabin. And to accommodate so many people for dinner, a custom 8’ round table with a 4’ Lazy Susan in the middle was built out of walnut by a referral from Bruce Hafley with Timberframe Carolina,
One technique Kayla used to create a ‘cabin’ atmosphere’ Kayla was to install rough sawn wood on the walls running horizontally. And to break up the stained timber appearance, she decided to paint them a moss green color. For the sheet rocked walls in the bedrooms, Kayla went with a painted knock-down textured painted wall. On a smaller scale, the wine barrel sink pedestal in the great room is a nice touch. And the log stools around the kitchen table remind the family when they’re eating just how grateful they are to be together with family and friends enjoying nature from a naturally crafted Timberpeg home.
